CAR FIRE HOCKEY RIOT DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER STANLEY CUP FINAL JUNE 15, 2011

Car fire started just as Game #7 Stanley Cup Final was ending. Most of crowd was still unaware anything was happening when several people set off dry chemical fire extinguishers, overturned a car, then set it on fire. On Georgia Street in front of Canada Post Building near CBC where large screen TV sets were set up.

@BeeEmmW This was at the end of the Stanley Cup Final. Vancouver lost the series. The fans were not amused. Hockey is right up there with motherhood in Canada. Vancouver has never won a Stanley Cup and they were soooooooo close.

@chizzle0 I was wearing a helmet that says BUTCH NEWS front and back and a T shirt that says BUTCH NEWS and I'm also 6'2" carrying a very impressive looking camera rig. I act like I'm supposed to be there and no one ever much hassles me. Many cops and TV camera people also recognize me because I cover a lot of events. The cop that carries the video camera also knows me and talks to me. Been lobbying city hall and got to ask the Premier when I did video of her to buy the cops better cameras

@MrParoleViolator Hindsight is always so easy. I wear a helmet in crowd situations for advertising but, Butch likes to be prepared. But, in hindsight, remember it's easy to be an expert after the fact.... but, it seems, if the series went 7 games, and it did, there was a big chance it would not go well if Vancouver lost the series. Putting that many people together without a large police presence is, IMO, pretty risky. But I was not in charge.

if only the cops knew that the kid with the red hair and canucks flag as a cape was the guy that started the fire...he was goading them the whole time and they would have had dozens of opportunities to smash his face against the pavement and arrest him for starting a riot.

If the police was having trouble with the rioters which they surely were, then they should have called in the military. Those guys would have loved to kick ass, some of these rioters would have gone home with either a boot print on their butts, or a military boot stuck up their ass.
