This video documents the problem with TV today, and a recommended solution.
The system, functionality, and interface of the custom remote was designed and prototyped by two 4th year System Design Engineering students at the University in Waterloo (Melina McLarty and Katie Cerar)
Big thanks to our design Supervisor Professor Stacey Scott.
You're right. Aside from a few features in the real prototype, the individual parts of the entire system aren't necessarily new (individually they can be found in different forms: email, twitter, etc). Often the features were included as an "after thought" to current systems, ex. fbook status showing up on internet TV shows. This disconnect could be partly why many have failed. SocialTV is different, we started from the ground up, 1st justifying, then seamlessly integrating these features.....
thanks! you are right, starting for scratch and designing the system was the goal of the project, to "fix" what was broken with TV from the user's end.
However as a bonus since television viewing statistics are so limited today, a system like this opens the doors to many better ways to market....dynamic/targeted commercials anyone???
I think this would drastically change the user experience, and create a higher intrinsic motivation for users to watch TV. Content producers would have MUCH better data, and feedback, in order to boost revenue via producing better content, and more targeted sales. If I had the spare time, I'd develop this product with Melina...as I think there would be many customers inerested in buying the rights to this product.

yawn. They have had this before in many forms. Most of which have failed.
