IT REALLY DOES.

1. They both based on childrens books with much sadder endings.(have a feeling that it's from the same author)

2. The art style is very similar.

3. The pacing is very similar.

and 4. They're both just as dramatic, tear jerking, funny and includes more natural gore than any kids movie nowdays XD

I just finished watching this movie. I generally don't watch animes, but I have to say this is a downright great find. I did indeed shed some manly tears while watching this alone in my basement, with the only comfort of my Spongebob snuggie.
