This is a video of our beautiful pug Frankie, unfortunately showing neurological symptoms of a Portosystemic Liver Shunt.
This video was taken when he was about 3 months old. It's pretty sad for us to watch, but when it was happening we had no idea what the cause could be.
We took him to the emergency centre that night and he was treated in hospital for 2 days.
He has been on medication and L.D since and is soon to have surgery, which we are currently saving for.
If you see any of these signs in your pup, especially after they have recently eaten, get them to a vet as soon as you can.

  • Hi beth916. Frankie has had his ups and downs. He is 2 in July. It has been trial and error with his food and medication but at the moment (tough wood) he seems to be doing really well on daily medication, hills ld dry food and light exercise. He put on heaps of weight with the dry food, didn't do so well on wet. At the moment we ate planning the surgery for later this year. I hope your pug is doing well after the surgery :)

  • Hi Cr199. That is so sad to hear. My heart goes out to you. Puggies are such fighters and he would have gone knowing you loved him so much.

  • Awww poor Frankie, how is he now?

  • Hi- My pug was just diagnosed with a liver shunt which only came to our attention because she was poisoned by the anti-inflammatory she was given after MPL surgery. I had no idea the pacing and head pressing were symptoms of anything! We have to wait til she's fully "flushed" before we can consider the surgery, so she's on a liver support med, 2 antibiotics and a stool softener. They are telling us she could make a complete recovery. Any input would be appreciated! And I hope Frankie is well!

  • Hi - Any update on your little guy? Our rescued Miniature Schnauzer has been diagnosed with a liver shunt. I've changed her diet a week ago and her behavior has changed "over-night". We're trying to avoid any meds since the liver is really needed to remove the toxins from the medicines. Surgery may still be an option, but for now we're just trying to get weight back on her. Good luck with all. Keep us updated.

  • Hi I was glad to see your video. I wish I could have seen it last year when my pug was ill.. it turns out it was a liver shunt .. and a bad one at that ..Toby had surgery last August which worked but then he had a huge seizure on the day he was supposed to come home and was left in a coma for two weeks and he was blind and unable to walk .. but he recovered slowly but he now has epilepsy.. his sight has returned and now he is full of life. thanks for putting on the video

  • My cat displays exactly the same symptoms..! We have been able to control the crisis by a careful balance of nutrition and herbal supplements. Check my videos if you can :) hugs to you and the pup, that's not a funny situation...

  • How is your little pug doing? We had our 2 1/2 yr old pug have shunt surgery a few days ago.

  • We just had to put our 6 year old pug down because of this. We had him on lactose treatment for 2 months. He got really bad, he wouldn't eat and when he did he would vomit. It was so sad..... :(
