I wonder what the conductor's gesture at 8:33 means.

The conductor, using the new Bärenreiter edition, interprets the "soli" indication in Violas (bar 59) and Celli (bar 63), as indicating that this variation (bars 60-75) is to be played by a string quartet of soloists. The 1st and 2nd Violins however do not have this "soli" indication in their parts and so Beethoven's intention is therefore not entirely clear. The charm of the decision here cannot be denied.

@lindzyIsAwesome yes, a very original idea that Tchaikovsky later stole for his 1812 overture (not a symphony, but still..)

Bellissimo -- tutto bene qui. Although I know this Third Symphony from the distant days of my youth, I have made an important discovery hearing this musical ensemble. Music is indeed very much alive and will live forever.
Vladimir Putin is a musician?
