All attempts made by the LTTE to prevent the escaping of Tamil civilians from their grip have been rendered futile.
the LTTE has deployed separate teams to shoot at the innocent civilians crossing the Lagoon and enter the No Fire Zone at Devipuram-North in Putumathalan. Recently a nineteen year old girl was killed in LTTE fire. The civilians are trying to overcome the LTTE pressure by fleeing the area. They have placed their total confidence in the Security Forces that protect them. It is regrettable that the terrorists shoot them as they cannot bear the situation.

He said the LTTE even opened fire on the fleeing civilians yesterday. The Security Forces did not retaliate and waited until the civilians crossed over. Some people were found dead in the Lagoon. But the troops could not take them out.

The Government and the Security Forces have taken maximum measures for the protection of the civilians although the LTTE is launching attacks from the No Fire Zone with heavy weapons to prevent the civilians fleeing. 5245 had crossed over to cleared areas from the 23rd of this month. 2652 out of them were males while 2593 were females. On Wednesday 2152 crossed over increasing the exodus. The LTTE adopt various strategies to prevent civilians from leaving.

  • There is hidden motive in the Diaspora's efforts to stop the war against the LTTE terror. A substantial number of Tamils living in Canada, Britain and other European countries are asylum seekers. They live in these countries on the pretence that the conditions in Sri Lanka are dangerous for their lives.

  • If the Sri Lankan government finishes the LTTE terror and establishes the democracy in the North as it did in the East these asylum seekers will lose their asylum status and have to repatriate. That is a stronger motive for their outcry against the Sri Lankan government than the plight of the civilians.
