A tale of survival. An Australian surfer is in the hospital after an encounter with a shark at a well-known beach. Heres more.
STORY:
The beach at Fingal Head in New South Wales is a favorite for families and surfers.
But beneath the waves it's known that sharks do frequent the waters here.
Now one has attacked a surfer as he swam 70 meters off shore.
A helicopter ambulance was called after the man aged in his 30s managed to make his own way back to shore.
[Steve Leahy, Lifeguard Supervisor]:
"He tells us he just had this sudden hit to his leg. And there was some violent thrashing in the water for a short period of time."
Concerned beach goers used a surfboard leg rope to make a tourniquet while they waited for the ambulance to arrive.
One paramedic described what he saw.
[Gavin Clark, Careflight Paramedic]:
"It was probably about that round in his thigh and it was very deep."
Police said the surfer suffered serious injuries to his left thigh, consistent with a shark bite.
The wound is approximately forty centimeters in diameter but no major blood vessels were damaged.
Police closed Fingal Head and several surrounding beaches while another helicopter performed a precautionary sweep of the area.
