Police in New York have begun clearing a park where Occupy Wall Street protesters have been camped since September.

Hundreds of officers wearing helmets and carrying shields gathered around Zucotti Park in the early hours of Tuesday morning, clearing away the tents and shelters in the city's financial district.
Police spokesman Paul Browne said the city and the owners of the park, Brookfield Office Properties, had issued leaflets to demonstrators, saying the park would be cleared for cleaning shortly after 1am (6am GMT).
The leaflet said the city and Brookfield had decided "that the continued occupation of Zucotti Park posed an increasing health and safety hazard to those camped in the park, the city's first responders and the surrounding community."
Around 15 people have been arrested so far, but most people had left peacefully, police said.
You can't put an idea in a dumpster. You can't stop what has started here and spread all over the country.

Activists have also reportedly chained themselves to trees and together, reports indicated.
Protesters have been told they can return to the park after it is cleared, but without their tents and belongings.
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has said the protesters should "temporarily leave" the park.
Samantha Tuttlebee, 35, said she was volunteering at the camp's medical tent when the raid began.
"I'm shocked. They put my arms behind my back. They are really violent," Tuttlebee said. "We were trying to leave and they threw us out."
Protester Dana Belicki told Sky News: "There are hundreds and hundreds of cops and they are pretty much in a full scale run.
"It is a little chaotic, there are a lot of people coming out, but we have been pushed around...and there are a lot of cops circling in and helicopters so we are just keeping moving."

She added that the protesters planned to come back to the park: "You can't put an idea in a dumpster.
"You can't stop what has started here and spread all over the country."
Protesters have not been deterred by the eviction, however, and have vowed to close down Wall Street - home to the New York Stock Exchange - on Thursday with a street carnival to mark the movement's two month anniversary.
The clearance appeared to be part of a coordinated effort by police across the US to clear out several 'Wall Street' protest camps in various cities.
On Monday, police in Oakland, California, cleared out occupants of a protest camp, while in Portland, Oregon, police confronted an estimated 1,000 protesters on Sunday.
The Occupy Wall Street movement campaigns against economic inequality.
In a statement, they said: "Such a movement cannot be evicted.
"Some politicians may physically remove us from public spaces - our spaces - and, physically, they may succeed.
"But we are engaged in a battle over ideas.
"Our idea is that our political structures should serve us, the people - all of us, not just those who have amassed great wealth and power.
"We believe that is a highly popular idea, and that is why so many people have come so quickly to identify with Occupy Wall Street and the 99% movement."

  • Protesting is pointless. People need to do alot more. It should be an eye for an eye. Peoples lives have been wrecked by corrupt bakers and politicians and the only punishment is having their own lives wrecked the same way they went out and wrecked millions of others.

Here in the UK we have just had evictions for the St. Pauls protestors. The government, church and bankers won and they win all the time. They won't be stopped by protests - wall street and st pauls evictions show us that

  • @sweetypie000 i saw that live on bbc world news here in the u.s.a.

  • The Mayor of NYC is super liberal I don't believe he didn't give them tons of notice. They were trespassing and he was even gonna allow them back in. I have no remorse for them.

  • @CrismaFire and egypt's mubarak did the same thing, so did the king in the island of bahrain, look at what syria is doing to thier protesters, along with yemen and even what happened in libya as well. the iranians crushed thier protesters too. this is no different. and my channel is set to world wide, its gotten hits from all over europe, all over asia, including india, all over the middle east, and south america too. with most hits coming from canada, uk, germany, australia, guam, brazil.

  • @BillKiernan the thing you have to understand is that politicians can simply ignore protests once you go home. but once you stay and dont leave they can no longer ignore you.

  • HUM!!...let me think for a second???...local businesses???...hundreds of businesses lost to free trade agreements???... thousands of dollars???...."staged" wars that cost thousands of civilian's lives and american soldiers lives???...bring democraty to the arab countries???....peaceful demonstraters beeing "attacked" by their own police force all over the USA???....millions of american citizens out of work???....yes, greed is what does all that!!...get your priorities straight for god's sake!!

  • @rickthelup "how greedy can they get?...how about the millions of people that lost there jobs" and holding a rainbow gathering in a park isn't going to do JACK SHIT to get people jobs. you have a right to assemble, not a right to squat anywhere you want. "how greedy can they get?" in one breath you talk about jobs and in another you badmouth local businesses and support a protest that costs the taxpayers thousands of dollars a day to deal with. grow up.
