@easygoer13 She had a ruptured mediastinal artery in her mid to upper abdomen. The aorta is the main artery that leads from the heart and where it splits in the midgut one of the larger arteries dissected. She didn't die instantly. She died in about 45 seconds to a minute.

Yes, that was one of the more memorable times a horse died in a race.

There was another horse in that race that became famous in the southern hemisphere years later. The great Australian Champion Village Kid retired at the age of 13. Before he retired he ran a charity time trial to see if he could better the world mark for a 13 year old on any sized track of 1:56.6 held by rambing Willie. At 13 Village Kid (whose stable name was Willie) ran an improbable 1:55 flat on a half mile track.
