The new western ocean entry has formed a large bench that has buried most of the black sand beach. It now extends about 800 feet along the coast and is well into the ocean. Large volumes of lava are still approaching the new ocean entry on the surface and under the crust. Other surface flows are approaching the ocean in the area between the established ocean entry and this location.

  • Is this the famed black sand beach Punaluu? So if I am going to Hawaii, can I plan on not seeing the black sand beach after all?

  • The black sand beach at Punaluu is safe many miles away.

  • The Lava Vs The Ocean who is winning? Lol

  • The lava has the upper hand right now. But as it gets into deeper water, large chunks of the new bench will start breaking off and slipping under the waves.

  • Could you swim in those waters?

  • Even without the lava, most of the coast is rocky with steep cliffs which keep people from reaching the water. This particular area is about one mile from the nearest road. I have never seen swimmers in the area, although I have seen videos of underwater divers near the lava and a paddle boarder next to a similar ocean entry.

  • great !!!

  • u are much cooler than the bear gryll guy or how he is called. u even showed 2 vids of how fake he is!

  • I would not even consider a swim near there ...... think of the fumes, hot water, sharp lava, wave action and possible collapse of the shelf - nope, I don't think so :0)

  • Thanks for the great video volcanochaser. My wife and I stayed in Kona last January but we came to see the lava off Hwy 130. We drove about 2 miles west to the tourist viewing area. Even being so far away it was a spectacular experience.

  • I don't know why but I find all this primevil action relaxing...more please.

  • In think the HVO people named this "West-Waikupanaha" entry :)

    Thanks for uploading!
