The turtlebot is platform that was developed by willow garage and consists of an IRobot create, a high powered netbook (dual core 1.8Ghz+), a microsoft kinect and a gyro. Since the turtlebot is not available yet, a clone was developed and is described at http://profmason.com/?p=1590. This is a great platform to become familiar with ROS the robotics operating system.
What type of netbook are you using? From my tests so far it looks as if netbooks with N270 CPUs are underpowered to run AMCL.

@motters2001 The N270 is too slow. I am using a D525 which is a dual core 1.8Ghz Atom. I am localizing at 5Hz and doing the path planning at about 0.2 Hz. The visualization is offloaded to a 1.3Ghz netbook.
