The turtlebot is platform that was developed by willow garage and consists of an IRobot create, a high powered netbook (dual core 1.8Ghz+), a microsoft kinect and a gyro. Since the turtlebot is not available yet, a clone was developed and is described at http://profmason.com/?p=1590. This is a great platform to become familiar with ROS the robotics operating system.

  • What type of netbook are you using? From my tests so far it looks as if netbooks with N270 CPUs are underpowered to run AMCL.

  • @motters2001 The N270 is too slow. I am using a D525 which is a dual core 1.8Ghz Atom. I am localizing at 5Hz and doing the path planning at about 0.2 Hz. The visualization is offloaded to a 1.3Ghz netbook.
