ILLEGAL ALIEN IN CALIFORNIA TAKES OVER SOLDIER'S IDENTITY

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A Fort Campbell soldier fighting for the nation in Iraq is a victim, not in the Middle East, but at home.

He's the victim of identity theft.

While Emanuel Marrero faces combat in Iraq, his wife Melissa Marrero is in the United States, taking on the IRS.

Even though she is very busy, police are helping her.

The Internal Revenue Service wants her to pay back taxes.

Someone has been using her husband's Social Security number to work and open accounts in California.

The suspect hasn't paid federal taxes. Now, the IRS wants the money.

Melissa Marrero is a full-time mom.

Not only is she handling three young children, her husband is a Fort Campbell soldier serving in Iraq.

Melissa Marrero said her life is hectic without him.

She said it got even crazier when she picked up the mail over the holidays.

"I get a letter from the IRS. I opened it, and to my surprise, they told me, hey you have some unreported income and you owe us two grand in 20 days," she said.

Since that letter she has taken on another full-time job -- investigator.

"You know I'm constantly on the phone to California, dealing with them, the detective here and the IRS," she said. "I still have a list of places I have to call.

She said a man by the name of Caesar Villa has been using her husband's Social Security number in California to work and open accounts for phone service, apartments and utilities.

He has damaged her husband's credit.

"Oh, he's shocked. He's confused. He's like, 'what did I do? Did I throw something out? Did one of my friends steal the number?'"

She's got the proof including police reports, credit records and the gas bill.

Even with the suspect's name and her husband's Social Security number trying to turn off the gas is not that easy.

She said it's frustrating.

"We can't shut off his gas. That's not his gas, you know," she said.

Her husband can't do much.

While he's on a mission in Iraq, she's taking on a financial fight here at home.

"See there's nothing we can do," she said.

It is difficult to recover from identity theft. It takes a lot of time, sometimes years.

The IRS told Melissa Marrero to mail them the police reports.

She's done that. She mailed two of them - one from police at Fort Campbell and the other from police in Torrence, Calif.

She hasn't heard back from the IRS.

The government estimates more than 700,000 people are victims of identity theft each year.
