  • @overthemoo well with this being broadway I'd just expect that they would find a performer that was at the top of their game both as a vocalist and and actress. Judi Dench and Elaine Stritch are both amazing but seeing that this character is supposed to be remarkable for her voice, even within the show, I find Montego to be pretty disappointing. I'm with @DominiqueBarnes. I have quite a few female friends that haven't graced broadway yet that would sing Montego off the stage anyday.

  • Okay, can everyone please stop saying how Montego's voice is wrong for the part? If her voice wasn't right, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTON THE PART OF FELICIA! Stop bashing her; this woman is phenominal. Trust me, there are other actresses out there who's voices were wrong for the part (Idina Menzel, cough cough)

  • @TBon3Supl3x But why does her voice have to be better or equal to that of other vocalists? You're ability to perform is what is most important. I mean, look at the praise given to the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Elaine Stritch. I'm not saying Montego is in the same level of talent acting-wise, I'm just trying to prove a point regarding vocal strength. Dench can do more in a spoken-sung line than most vocalists in full belt.

  • @TBon3Supl3x you say her belt isn't powerful are you listening correctly! Belting and holding these high notes is pretty amazing stuff.

  • she was amazing in MEMPHIS!

  • I don't think she is very good at all. Both her head voice and belt leave a lot to be desired....

  • @MiamiJoe739 you tempt me to say who I am, but I could see that blowing up in my own face quickly since I'm not praising Montego. We can agree to disagree, I'm not saying she can't act, not saying she can't dance, not saying she's not captivating. I'm saying she isn't by any stretch a noteworthy black female vocalist. Is she terrible? Not at all, she's good alright and she must've had something special to get the part I just can't imagine it was her voice.

  • Someone said I must be prejudiced for my feelings on her voice... actually I am African American, she's just not the calibour of vocalist of other leading black women that have been on broadway. I think she's a fine actress, she just doesn't have much belting power, or a very powerful mix at that. When I listen to "Someday" on Memphis, her head voice just dissapoints me. You're right broadway does seem to like her, I've just heard many less succesfull black women with far superior voices. IMO.

  • It was amazing to watch her performing on Broadway. It's a must-see show, Memphis on Broadway!

  • @TBon3Supl3x You obviously don't know talent or are extremely prejudiced
