@Massey207 That's because you never heard Harry Hibbs do it. I like this version best, but as a proud Canadian, I think that Hibbs' version runs a very close second.

I believe it was first published as a broadside ballad between 1850-1870 in the United Kingdom, but it is difficult to know who wrote it and when - I think it was a popular ballad carried orally from generation to generation long before it was written down.
