NB: if you are going to judge Bernadette's entire performance of Rose in GYPSY 6 years ago off only one clip, let it be her Tony Award Performance, as it is more in context and without a handheld microphone like this performance.

  • no...she did not!..LuPone ran an entire year, and ..She, Laura Bananti and Boyd Gaines won BESTACTRESS, BEST SUPPORTING< and BEST ACTOR ..and the play won for best revival, and best overall..and ..I saw both. LuPone was better by far.

  • @roberttormejazz The LuPone revival had 359 performances and ran for less than one year. The Peters revival had 484 performances and ran for over one year (i.e. about 36% longer). I don't want to debate the subjectivity about which revival or actors were better. But objectively, your claim that the "2003 revival was cancelled" is wrong. If anything the LuPone revival was 'cancelled' - it closed 3 months earlier than the original closing notice, while BP's revival was extended past its notice.

  • PATTI LUPONE Destroyed Bernadette in the most recent revival, the 2003 show was so bad, it was cancelled! I love Bernadette but there is no comparison.

  • @roberttormejazz What are you talking about? The 2003 revival ran longer than LuPone's revival.

  • @fatherdebbyUm, Bernadette Peters is anything but cheap. She is beautiful & totally graceful. Her dress here is gorgeous & compliments her FANTASTIC figure perfectly.

Also, Peters has a wonderful voice. If you didn't like her in the role, that's fine, it's your opinion & you're entitled to it. But you cannot deny that she is arguably the most beloved actress on Broadway, & has been called flawless by Sondheim himself.

Also, Rose is not meant to be a mother 'wanting the best for her children'.

  • @boynamedalexxx Fatherdebby:Your description of Rose doesn't match the actual character. That's not my opinion, it's based on everything Laurents has written on her. Also, if you've read anything of Laurents', then you'd know, YES, he did dislike the 2003 revival, because he didn't care for Sam Mendes' vision. However, he *praised* Peters' performance, saying that she was so good, she deserved a better director. It was his idea to cast her in the first place.

  • @dolbinau OH lordey, y'all. "Cancelled" isn't really the word you're looking for. Both closed earlier than intended. Both actors were great. The Mendes revival overall was dreadful, even if Ms. Peters poured all of herself into it. The Laurents revival was what theatre should be.

Both actors are stars/legends for good reason.

  • That ovation and her blowing kisses made me weep.

  • LADYWOOD.

  • She just looks too young. Bernadetter Peters seems about twenty years younger than her actual age.

  • @AngelAdorable3 Yes! I loved Patti and I like her voice more for this song but when Bernadette is choking up you really feel it, she conveys the emotions so well.

  • @laylahamidou THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER SAW ANY MISTAKE BY Bernadette except this one!!!

  • Say what you will about who the best Rose is, but Bernadette is FANTASTIC when she chokes up. It's raw and it hurts and you can feel it.

  • I have to say, i love her breakdown better than any of the others. It's not as insane, but it is thoroughly hurt and emotional. love it.

  • Bernadette Peters is amazing in this. So much emotion. I personally think that the hand held microphone is not a problem; it seems as though this is one of those concerts where they mostly just focus on the music and leave out most of the scenery. In such a case, it is actually better to have a hand-held microphone since they have better sound and are less likely to cut out. I've seen it happen many times on live filmed productions.

Chris Colfer in Glee is also a great version.

  • who is casting this show? Lupone? Peters? Lansburry? Jeez learn what voice is required.
