Daryl and Richard Munday

Daryl and Richard were an active couple who worked overseas, travelled extensively and enjoyed a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities.

In 2002 things changed. Daryl became confused and forgetful and lost her job working in a busy solicitors' office.

After years of frustrating and inconclusive tests in which Daryl was told she didn't have Alzheimer's, she was finally diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2006.

In addition with coping with Daryl's diagnosis, it took Richard two years to get the benefits to which Daryl is entitled and negotiating the system proved stressful for both of them.

Richard is now fundraising to raise both awareness of dementia and money for research and is doing a tough sponsored climb.

These have been made possible by a generous legacy from Mr George Leonidas Embiricos.

There are more than 750,000 people in the UK affected by dementia with numbers set to rise to 1 million by 2021. More than half of these have Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.
