The controversial Nampho Dam or West Sea Dam, also known as the West Sea Barrage, is a barrage located 15 km west of the special city of Nampho, North Korea. It is a huge, eight-kilometer-long system of dams, three lock chambers, and 36 sluices, allowing the passage of ships up to 50,000 tons. The dam closes the Taedong River off from the Yellow Sea. It was built from 1981 to 1986, with the resources of the whole country directed to this main construction project. The stated goal of the West Sea Dam was:
The raising of the water level in the Taedong River and increased ship traffic;
The prevention of seawater intrusion into the fresh water, thus solving the water supply problem;
The irrigation of additional land, enlarging the arable territory of the region.
Foreign critics claim raising the Taedong river level has led to the loss of valuable farmland, contributing to North Korean famine.
The dam is considered a major accomplishment of North Korea. It is a commonly seen backdrop for North Korean television news broadcasts on KCNA, and is a stop for international tourists.
The locks are at geographical coordinates 38°41′N 125°10′E.
The dam's estimated total cost was $4 billion (US).

  • All countries have their problems, and even in North Korea life is very sweet for few... the difference is that what is the distribution and possibility to influence matters. In North Korea only the elite is doing very well rest are doing horribly. In Europe there is much more distribution... but there are huge problems for the poor... but would I personally want to live in North Korea... don't think so! I like my internet, and ability to buy pizza and ability tell jokes about moron politicians.

  • When was this film made? What year?

  • Wasn't this partially the cause of the great famine?

  • the whole point of the barrage was to block navy ships & submarines from US and South Korea camping in their waters

  • If this made in mid 1990s....looks more late 1960 or 1970s.

  • I have the dvd of this!

  • north korea says it's so strong yet many weapons r extreamly out dated

  • weird how their tech is so dated for the 90s. Looks more at place in the 60-70s

  • roads look super busy lol

  • i cant stop laughing when narrator says "Korear" again and again in this video LOL

  • From my knowledge - alot of this technology was developed by the Dutch who built vast sea barriers due the fact that OVER half of their country is reclaimed land that is under sea levels.

  • I like the music xD!
