CHIBA, JAPAN - NTT DoCoMo has developed the prototype based on a new wireless power standard called "Qi." The Qi system transfers power by induction. Electricity flows when a wire coil, like this one in a battery, is aligned with an energized coil in a charging pad. DoCoMo has three prototypes at this week's Ceatec show in Japan - a cell phone with embedded coil, a battery with the coil for existing handsets, and a portable back-up battery pack.

  • so i cant put my iphone on that? kinda sucks then :P

  • @stalker7d7 I should also mention, I await the day when we don't have to, no(we already don't have to), just plain don't use oil pumped from the ground

  • @shaurz True, but:

1: It will get more efficient, possibly become just as efficient as our wires, if not more.

2: With more and more energy being harvested from wind and solar sources, it won;t be as big a deal as if it was all from coal/oil...

    (:

  • One problem... this makes charging less energy efficient.

  • I become an Headache even thinking about sitting near such an alternating magnetic field

  • Very interesting. I think if it's successful, it will then lessen the wear and tear of the port so that waterproof phones are retain their waterproofness for a longer time. ^^
