@MMAUpdater He was the only Pride lightweight champion, for starters. In his first run at LW, BJ Penn beat who? Matt Serra and Din Thomas? Lost to Jens Pulver. Gomi was 24-2 when he won the title in 2005, BJ was a welterweight at the time.

@xbm Yeah but how much did Gomi really do for the sport? He didn't do early as much in the sport as BJ. Don't get me wrong though, Gomi was good.

@MMAUpdater BJ Penn wins at LW were most notable the second time around, when he beat Joe Daddy, Sherk, Florian and Sanchez. His first run at LW was, like I said, at a time when the division was crap in the UFC. Gomi, to me, is the best LW of all time.

@MMAUpdater Gomi was #1 LW for longer than BJ was, actually. Gomi was destroying dudes back when the UFC's LW division was at it's weakest. Edgar has also beat BJ twice. At the time Gomi was in Pride, he was beating all of the best lightweights. BJ was in the welterweight division, at this time. When he made his second run in the LW division, he won the title, defended it twice but then got beat twice by Frankie moved up again.

@xbm Edgar hasn't done too much in the sport yet. I like watching Edgar fight but he hasn't done as much as BJ Penn has for the sport, neither guy has.
