  • I have been struck by the absence of female atheists on Youtube. What do you make of this?

  • certainly less prevalent, there are a few out there (anangel13, mooeypoo, angrylittlegir1, judelicious). There might be a gender difference in that being a youtube atheist is, by it's nature, confrontational. Male's might either pursue this or simply not mind it thanks to testosterone, while females are happy being atheists quietly in real life. Just a thought, the real reason might be totally unrelated.

  • Why does prayer mean that one is asking for something at the expense of another? "Favoritism".

I wasn't sure how you came to that conclusion.

Even if we take a nontheistic look at the methods of prayer we can see that there's more to it than that. If there's no separate, conscious god entity there is still an internal operation of reconciliation, contemplation, wholeness, forgivness and positivity, etc.

A regular personal activity like this is what many atheists need, imo.

  • Contemplation, meditation, internal investigation, all well and good. I like to clear my head with a beer on my porch listening to the birds and frogs, I'm sure everyone has their own method. Favoritism doesn't need to be at the expense of another, one need not take to get. Still a prayer is a personal request, at the very least requiring special attention and consideration, asking a deity to intervene instead of going along with his original plan.

  • Hey Kalin, have you ever done a deconversion video? It would be interesting for the subscribers. Just throwing it out there. Take care.

  • I did, way back when, let's see if i can find it:

  • @terry585 I'm a female atheist. :3

  • @gespilk Touche good person.....Touche....

  • @FiremanLouvier

Well, in that case I guess we could squeeze the Sun and the Earth celebrations in one day since the are created about the same time. ;-)

Once I looked at religious calendar and I can tell you those people have something for almost every day of the year. Why we should be any less.

  • @gespilk By that thinking we wouldn't have school at all...cuz theres so many holidays....Fuck it lets do it

  • Actually we should celebrate:

    1)The Big Bang day.

    2)The Sun Creation Day.

    3)The Earth creation Day.

    4)The Beginning of Life Week.

5)The Emergence of Modern Human Day.

    6) ... 365)A "great human name or invention" day. That is Newton, Mozart, Darwin, Freud, etc.

Those are only the planetary level celebrations. Next are more regional or seasonal(spring, summer) type of celebrations in countries,towns,..., family, personal.

No religion needed.Celebrations are tool to bond people and express hope/ideas.

  • "Do you need a good excuse to do that?"

No, but with that logic you should do it everyday.

  • Wow, he assumes all atheists used to be Christians. I thought his questions were not that bad until I heard the end of the video.

  • Many people think we are co-creators with the gods and it requires an active participation to change behavior. "Asking" a deity for guidance or solutions may be nothing more than communicating with one's own subconscious, if we prefer to use that language, but the act itself certainly isn't more "selfish" than havin a few cold ones (which believers do).

A generic outline for "prayer" (571 Republic) can be found in Plato's "evening prayer". No deities required but a sacred attitude helps.
