Matt explains his method for growing trees for maximum survival in a fairly harsh environment at Mulloon Creek Natural Farms near Canberra, Australia. Eventually this swale designed by Geoff Lawton will support a forest of trees based on sustainable and sensible design,

  • i really like the care taken in planting each tree, which is likely to mean reduced mortality rates.

could you explain why deciduous exotics are favoured over native trees? the video suggested it was to do with increasing fertility near the soil surface, but for what purpose? to establish food plants?

  • Yes to encourage soil fertility and raise food web organisms and encourage rich diversity of food forest plants both native and exotic species.
