7 Principles of the Strengthen Social Security Campaign:
1) Social Security did not cause the federal deficit; its benefits should not be cut to reduce the deficit.
2) Social Security should not be privatized in whole or in part.
3) Social Security should not be means-tested.
4) Congress should act in the coming few years to close Social Security's funding gap by requiring those who are most able to afford it to pay somewhat more.
5) Social Security's retirement age, already scheduled to increase from 65 to 67, should not be raised further.
6) Social Security's benefits should not be reduced, including by changes to the COLA or the benefit formula.
7) Social Security's benefits should be increased for those who are most disadvantaged

  • Here are the real facts from my RMI program at GSU......

Retirement benefits are predicted to exceed revenues in 2023; assets (loans to the government) will be exhausted by 2036.

SS disability trust fund will be depleted by 2017.

Currently, there are 2.9 workers for each SS beneficiary. This this will drop to 2.1 workers by 2035.

Projected actuarial deficit over next 75 years is $6.5 trillion or 2.22% of taxable payroll.

  • @HumanNonPerson CONT FROM PREV COMMENT The argument of SS isn’t really about does it work. It is more of can it be done better? Should I have to give my money to the government and wait until I retire to get it back. Or is it better for me to invest the money myself? Or can we do both? Can you choose SS and get the benefits or choose not to get it and not get its benefits. We pride ourselves on our free country, but is it really? I prefer the freedom over the security.

  • This is stupid. You didn't say anything other than this is good, they are bad and are lying to you. How about some cold hard facts. And you are right SS does pay its own way. And it does help many Americans. But it is IOW's. The government takes money from SS account and "invests" it in government bonds (aka IOU). Money taken in from government bonds are used to fund other projects. So in an indirect way SS money is used for other things. There is no bank account for SS. CONT IN REPLY

  • I strongly believe SS is necessary and a right, for those who have paid into it. I have problems with the part of SS that grants money for disability to the millions who can work. I know of many people who abuse the system. If that was closely monitored, billions would be saved monthly!

  • @Andyterranbase1 ... regardless of what the federal gvt owes or does not owe SSA, the point is that social security does work. The federal gvt dipping into the Social Security Fund is another topic..

We have paid for Social Security, it is not an entitlement program. You're SS wage is based on the amount of money you contributed over a lifetime. If you didn't work or worked for wages "under the table", you won't qualify for SS benefits. It's one sure way of getting a pension in old age.

  • @Samantha30090 do you not realize the federal government owes the S.S.A over 12 trillion dollars?

  • @Andyterranbase1 - I'd say you're describing yourself. You surely can't be too bright if you advocate against your own best interest. Only a fool wouldn't want to have income in their old age when they're incapable of getting out to make a living. Social Security is paid for by each of us over our working life. If you did not work and you did not contribute, you get nothing, at all. Your wage is based on what you paid into social security. It does not contribute to the deficit. Wake up silly.

  • @Samantha30090 your one of the sheep i guess...

  • I need closed caption for the deaf people.

  • @Andyterranbase1 ... ummmm ... i think the reason they "have to make the video" is not because Social Security doesnt work, but because Social Security DOES work but there are so many LIES spread about it not working. I think you missed the point, completely. No wonder our country is in such a sad shape, fella.
