16 Harrier jump jets have made a final flypast from RAF Cottesmore to mark their retirement from service. The jets took off from RAF Cottesmore, in Rutland Leicestershire this afternoon. They flew over seven military bases, the towns of Stamford, Oakham and Lincoln before landing for the final time at RAF Cottesmore. The decision to retire the jet fleet was made as part of the cuts announced in the Strategic Defence and Security Review.

  • just sell them to countries that has no proper airforce like Philippines

  • scrap then?

    Just sell then to india!

  • Well the English would go and vote for the conservatives, at least Gordon Brown pushed through the new aircraft carriers before he left office or we would be left with no defence at all. The Conservatives were going to cancel this too but were too late so they scrapped the £4.1bn raf nimrods, You only have yourselves to blame, you should have voted for labour.

  • @sunnahproduction

    You idiot.

  • british army = nazis

  • load of crap! one f15 could take out ten sqdns of harriers

  • They had to go someday...they would have got more expensive the older they got. I hold up the Sea Harrier as an example. Yes it's sad to see them go, but these are uniquely difficult times we live in. Our priorities must lie at home, not abroad, or with other peoples' wars. I am going to get flak for saying this, but it needed to be said.

  • i loved those harriers, my dad used to work as a fitter at a harrier factory near where i live and they certainly were/are one of a kind! so loud and even after all these years its still awesome to see them still in the air, ready to strike!! amazing aircraft..... farewell!!

  • that old bloke's comments ring true with the F111 as well. They were retired here in Australia this month.

So amny great aircraft being scrapped simply because of politics gone bad.

  • The Harriers ended their flight in Rutland, not Leicestershire.

Question is, while we wait for the replacement, what fills the gap?
