One of the most vital eras in world history is the colonial period. People basically wore simple, plain outfits. Usually, a hat was put on by men and women to create a specific style and fashion and primarily, to keep their heads warm from the cold weather. The surroundings during this era were quite cruel and an indoor heating system, a fireplace and hot bed warmer, limited them in ways of keeping their selves warm.

Young adults and little girls alike have become fond of the concept of wearing clothes inspired by the outfits of Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Elizabeth and Mari Antoinette. As the popularity of this colonial female and male costume escalates, it has become one of the major outfits sported during parties like Halloween and costume events. With this, colonial girl costumes have truly become one of the most in demand outfits and costumes.

It's just easy to create a colonial costume for either male or female. Here are the steps:

For a colonial girl costume, first thing you have to do is fold the white construction paper into half and measure the cuff of the shirt. Cut the paper to make it fit and utilize a double sided tape to attach it to the white paper "cuff". Next is to, slide in the paper sleeves between paper folds and seal it with a double-sided tape.
Measure the length from your waist to your ankle and add 2 inches to the measurement you derived. Then, measure your waistline and double the measurement for the skirt.
Orderly fold the cloth in such a way that the right sides of the fabric comes in contact with each other. Adjust the fabric and cut off unnecessary and excessive cloth. Give an allowance of an inch for the seam and start sewing the edges outside.
Next, fold the top of the skirt, inside out to form a casing for the elastic. Allot a minimum of 1 ½ seam allowance and sew the elastic casing. Leave around 3 inches gap in the center back of it. Remember to pin the fold in place to make sure that you have the right allowance for the elastic to fit in.
Cut off a portion of the elastic piece that is half of the waist's dimension. Connect and secure the safety pin at the end of the elastic piece. Bring the other end of the elastic towards the fabric so not to remove the elastic while stitching the casing in place. Next, insert the elastic or safety pin into the casing until you see the other end of the elastic coming out in the other side of the casing. Secure the fabric to the elastic by pinning it inside the casing and stitch the elastic to the cloth.
Measure a strip of fabric to around 4 inches wide and cut it from the 36 x 44 inch cloth. Fold in half to form a 2 x44 inch wide strip. Make sure that the insides of the cloth come in contact with each other. Secure the edges with a pin and then stitch them together.
Keep all raw edges hidden by stitching the remaining edges under. For the rectangular hem, pin a rectangle shaped cloth under a 2 inch strip. Stitch and tada! You now have the apron for a colonial girl costume.
And finally, secure the doily on the head with the use of pins, to create a realistic colonial girl costume. This will be the pinner cap. Then, tuck the shirt to the skirt and put on an apron around your waist. That's all there is to it -- you are now officially a colonist!
