i have the same thing but louder than that the is on them is the rockers like as the engine gets older overtime the rockers start to wear out or the bearings might be warn out!!!

On our 2000 X we had a cracked exhaust manifold on the pass. side. More throttle the clicking gets faster. Took me 6 hour to replace. Now a year later the drivers side is cracked. Flaw on Nissan and was recallable up to 7 years of model year.

hey my x is making this same noise. did you figure out what was the problem? thanks

maybe its just a piece of crap.... unlike mine:)

I didnt read anyone elses responses but mine was loud too. Did a knock sensor relocation and it fixed the tick and got way better fuel mileage. I know this video is like 2 years old but I thought I would share.

they might like "chains" in some of their engines, but in the XTERRA's that have the VG33E's they liked BELTS.
-
@omarantuan They have timing belts, not timing chains. And standard maintenance on them at 105,000 is timing belt and water pump (since the water pump is driven by the timing belt and you might as well replace it when you're in there). I just had my timing belt and water pump replaced at 99,000 and the timing belt was ready to go, and the water pump was leaking. The clicking is your exhaust!

i have an 02 too with 104,546 and i have to chane my time belt soon too because i hear a little click on it and my mechanic said its the timebelt that does that noise but i dont think xterras have chain belts ????

Your sound is an exhaust leak. X's are known for warping exhaust manifolds, since Nissan didn't allow enough clearance for expansion and contraction. When ordering a new manifold, make sure you get the newer version with the thicker flange. The key symptom to this leak is hearing the lifters. 9/10 times, it is the passenger side FYI

your problem are the valves or the hidraulick lifters
125,000kms... so .... 78000miles
