hehe yea im aware of that, i actually have my own set-up thats all done just the way i like it but i like too keep the default one so that people who are less familier with the blender interface will have the same set-up as me so they can follow along, but im sure that will help alot of other people who read it.

my blender doesn't have mesh tools...what version is he using?

i think this one was dose with 4.8... but 4.9 also has mesh tools... maybe try follow the tutorial again word for word... you need to be in edit mode of a mesh to see the mesh tools panel appear... else it is unavailable

You do know that there are other 2 easier ways to draw nicer terrain?
1. requires to have a 2D drawer where you make black noise on white paper, the more black it is the higher the terrain will be.
2. is a special tool in blender in wich you start dividing, however with this tool when you move a point, every other point moves with it in order to look hilly and not go straight up

ok well the first technique youre talking about involves useing a displacement modefire which only allows you to change the vertexs highs across one axis... unless you have created a normal map which would require you to model the entire thing beforehand completely defeating the perpous. and the secound way you mention is exactly what i said accept useing multires instead of just subdividing the mesh strait off... this technique gives you a quick randomly generated terrain that you can then edit
