A 104-year-old van cleaner believed to be Britain's oldest worker has died - shortly after clocking off from a final shift at the office.
Cigarette-smoking Buster Martin, who also completed the London Marathon in 2008 at the age of 101, died on Tuesday evening.
He had been employed by a London plumbing company for the past five years where he washed the company's fleet of vehicles
Announcing the death yesterday, Pimlico Plumbers managing director Charlie Mullins said: 'I can't believe it. Only yesterday afternoon he was in the canteen knocking back one of Buster's Beers, and now today he is gone.
'Everybody here at Pimlico is devastated at the news and he will be missed by all. He was a great fellow who was committed to his job washing vans and was a great example to all.'
Mr Martin claimed he was born in September 1906, and that his mother smuggled him into the UK from France.
He said he was raised in an orphanage in Cornwall before making his way to London, where he worked at Brixton Market. He later joined the army, served in World War Two, and also married and fathered 17 children.
The hard working employee refused to retire and even reported for work on his 100th birthday. He relaxed by enjoying 'a beer or two and 20 cigarettes daily'.
Mr Martin first made headlines in 2007 when he fought off a gang of youths - an incident that prompted then-Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell to say the centenarian was 'living proof of why people should not be written off once they pass retirement age'.
A year later, he was the focus of more media attention after he completed the London Marathon. Although he is believed to be the oldest person to finish the course, the Guinness Book Of Records refused to acknowledge the record because Mr Martin did not have a valid birth certificate.
And Mr. Martin is now set to gain posthumous recognition. He was interviewed by documentary film maker Mark Wexler for his latest project, How To Live Forever, which explores man's quest for immortality. The film is set for release in the U.S. next month.
'It's a great shame that Buster has not lived to see this film premier,' Mr Mullins said.
''Buster certainly enjoyed life and was living life to the full right up until the end.'

Buster Martin successfully completed the London Marathon in 10 hours. As he expected a bottle of beer was waiting for him at the end.
Apparently he died 11 April 2011.
