Just google nest boxes for bluebirds and you will find plans for building them. Bluebirds and Tree Swallows use virtually the same type of box. It is actually late in the game for putting up nest boxes this year. They start in February or March and the last young will generally be fledging (leaving the nest) in July or August. You can always put one up, but it may be too late this year to attract the birds. There is a Newfoundland in Canada and three states so I don't know which you mean.

Tree Swallows and Bluebirds have similar tastes. Actually Tree Swallows like to be around water (Violet Green Swallows also use nest boxes and they don't need the water. Neither do the bluebirds. The prefer grassland being nearby as a source of food. Golf Courses (that don't spray for insects) and parks make great places for these boxes. I have boxes mounted on posts (5 to 6 feet above the ground) and hanging in trees (up to 17 feet above the ground). Tree Swallows will use any of these.

umm... what are your tips on how to get the swallows to nest? as in witvh direction and how hight and where to place them? I have been trying for a long time thanks

They will use nest boxes that are in direct sunlight or in partial shade. Other cavity nesting birds prefer more of a canopy over their boxes, but Swallows and Bluebirds not so much. Tree Swallows prefer to be around water, Violet Green Swallows don't need water to be nearby and they will also use your nest boxes. Direction doesn't matter for these small boxes because rain doesn't seem to bother them even if they face right into the rain. This is not true of nest boxes for larger birds.
