Angela Gheorghiu L'amour est enfant de boheme - Carmen, Bizet

This is soprano Angela Gheorghiu singing Bizet's Carmen. I'm having a hard time trying to decypher whether this is a different version of the traditional Habanera from Carmen, or if it's simply another song of the same opera with similar lyrics.

Anyway, enjoy! It is beautiful, even if not as well known as the traditional Habanera =)

This was Bizet's first attempt to introduce Carmen in Act I; the reason why it was discarded in favour of the Habanera we all know is because it doesn't sound 'gypsy' enough. The tarantella style of the outer parts doesn't quite cover the overall operatic character of the number, so Bizet used instead a song by Spanish composer Sebastien Yradier which has the same melodic descent of 'L'amour est un oiseau rebelle' as we know it and the famous Cuban bass pattern (from Havana, hence habanera).

I came here from reading a phantom of the opera fanfiction where phantom told the authors OC to sing a some with more passion

Just curious, do you know where I can get this version of the Habanera in Orchestra/Vocal score? This will be interesting to sing at my recital.

This is the orginial Habanera. However, it was changed at some time to the Habanera we know today.
