January 15th is traditionally the day when Pongal is celebrated in the southern states of India, especially Tamil Nadu.

Pongal is a thanksgiving celebration explains Dr. Geeta Vasudevan. In this video clip she explains and shows us what is Pongal, while she cooks the dish that that forms the centerpiece of the celebrations. Pongal is the name of the dish that is cooked using fresh,newly harvested grains and vegetables.

A passionate historian, Dr. Vasudevan is the author of "The Royal Temple of Rajaraja" (Abhinav Publications, 2003). She is an advisory board member of DakshinaChitra (center for the living traditions of art, folk performing arts, craft and architecture of India with an emphasis on the traditions of South India. The center is located in Mutuukadu near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
