Donate non-perishable food to local food banks or donate your time to them.

Half marathon is Nov 29th. My time goal is around three hours. But I just want to finish.

Seattle AIDS Walk 5k: 35 min and 16 sec
Pumpkin Push time: 25 min 37 seconds
Magnuson Series 10k: 1 hour 9 min 13 seconds

  • I was thinking that since I'm planning on going culinary school and at some point opening a restaurant, what if I were to set up a voucher system with local charity organizations, so if people donate time and effort to these organizations, they can get a voucher for a free meal at my restaurant. I'm been trying to figure out what kind of restaurant I want to open and this is the the only thing that I've thought of so far that feels like a necessity.

  • rvbgeek: that's an awesome idea. There is a program here called Fare Start which teaches people who are out of jail how to work in restaraunts and how to work in kitchens so that they can get job skills for when they graduate. Maybe there is a similar program in your area where you can intern.

  • Good luck with your half marathon. I did it once. I did the first 10 miles in an hour and a half. I think the last 3+miles took almost and hour...I am sure you can do it in around 3 hours.

  • Susan2daye: dayum girl you were hauling!

  • Wow, I admire the way you are living your life! You are right in we are all living life together. It's just a shame some people make it so difficult for others and themselves. - Steve

  • OceanTownPictures: don't they ever!

  • we have the same shower curtains

  • rvbgeek: it's good that you continue to help people. Dignity is an issue in social services but often it's an excuse to refuse services for those in need - albeit a stupid one. Keep up the good fight.

  • (continued) All that they were charged was $5 for the box, which allowed us to cover the cost of the truck for shipping the food there. Ultimately that was the reason that someone from the state stepped in and claimed that we weren't allowed to charge anyone for a box "because they might be embarrassed if they can't pay". We could accept donations but not charge. This is a perfect example of someone looking out for their own ass, instead of caring for those in need.

  • This is one thing that I've struggled with for the last couple of years, Why is there so much hate and discrimination in this world? When in reality we are all human beings. I personally have donated over 140 hrs over the last 3 yrs to a local senior center that ran a twice a month food drop for its members. We always had at least 60 people if not more every single time. And every one of them was happy to be receiving that food. (running out of characters, to be continued...)
