"Kids welcome asylum seekers. When will grown-ups catch up?"
Have your say: www.oxfam.org.uk/ukpovertypost
To mark UK Refugee Week in June 2006 media co-op and Oxfam launched 'Primary', a video that brings a fresh perspective to the issue of asylum.

What do primary-school children think of asylum seekers and refugees? Asylum seeking children have gone behind the camera to ask them. They found that children from 7 to 12 years of age, who spend each school day with them, simply see asylum seekers as playmates and friends, who make the lives of local children more interesting and happier.

  • Great video, I think it's fantastic that kids don't have the hang-ups about helping others who are really in need that other people do. Recent research has shown that often Asylum seekers don't know where they are going to end up, don't make the decision to come to the UK themselves or are completely unaware about the welfare system in the UK when they leave their country of origin. They are more concerned with staying alive, not exploiting other countries.

  • This is brain washing, let kids make up their own mind about asylum seekers.

most of which are illegal immigrants abusing the system

  • asylum seekers are suppose to go to there nearest safe country not travel thousands of miles so they can come here and be put first in the que. Why should we let them sort of people in our country? We dont need them and we're full up as it is.

  • they should do the same interview in 20 years

  • this is a wonderful video and I am so happy to watch it. thankyou so much.

  • how can you say that? what on earth in those comments gives you any indication they were brainwashed???

children are pure before they reach adult years and say what they want from their hearts.

refugees are not illegal immigrants abusing the system they are individuals and families fleeing persecution, fleeing war torn death countries.

  • Kids always talk like this when they are young.........then they grow up and get real.

  • 79274333: It is hardly brain washing - obviously the kids are not scripted or the words would not come so easily, and i dont know where you are getting your facts - but you need to do some more research!

  • Exactly.. WTF ?

  • @79274333 ....... i agree. I posted a comment of my own, its anti-asylunm, but i think the admin will block it as they are to scared for the truth to be shown and read by others.

  • Asylum seekers have a track record of assimilating into the host country and contributing to the economy. In the long term, they create jobs and pay their fair share of taxes. Let's open our hearts and welcome asylum seekers and pressure our governments to take a role in stopping the persecution that makes people flee their country of origin. We should trading with countries that violate human rights.
