Impromptu Demo of OLPC's Children's Machine (aka $100 dollar laptop for the Third World) by Håkon Wium Lie, Chief Technology Officer at Opera Software. The group responsible for the initiative gave the Opera team a working prototype of the laptop so they could test Opera's software on the machine. This is an actual working prototype with internet accessibility any everything! All in all a noble cause.

The audio gets better as the video continues.

The following countries have announced they are interested in the program * Argentina * Brazil * Cambodia * Costa Rica * Dominican Republic * Egypt * Libya * Nigeria * Pakistan * Rwanda * Tunisia * Uruguay * Venezuela

  • Meanwhile at Apple Inc...

  • condoms arent a myth

  • So the starving 3rd world children will be getting this instead of food. Wonderful concept.

  • were do you get that

  • If they can read, of course. BTW, these laptops cost $220 USD now.

  • also, guy93, access to the internet would greatly benefit those in the 3rd world who have to deal with disease because they can look up prevention methods such as directions on how to construct nets keep out mesquitos. It will help to unite everyone in the online community and I thank John Maddog Hall from MIT for coming up with the idea.

  • Well, a lot of irrational hatred toward the west from 3rd world african countries has to do with ignorance and a lack of understanding for an alien culture. If these 3rd world nations are given access to the world wide web, then they'll get a better understanding for the parts of the world they don't understand from sources such as wikipedia and web chats that they can have internationally.

  • I see education as the only real hope for the Khmer to lift themselves out of the rut of poverty and corruption they are in currently. The two biggest education problems in Cambodia are putting a roof over the classrooms and getting the kids to show up for class (rather than work the rice paddy). If programs like this result in grade school attendance DOUBLING, then it's worth every penny.

  • We worked with the American Assistance for Cambodia to get the school built. I'm sort of passionate about the education situation in Cambodia especially given what the US did in the 70s to allow the civil war.
