"This is one of the most important shipwrecks in Canadian history because Investigator carried Capt. Robert McClure who discovered the western entrance to the Northwest Passage,"
HMS Investigator, abandoned in the Arctic 155 years ago and sunk in Mercy Bay N.W.T. Canada. "It's fundamental to Canadian sovereignty in the Northwest Passage"
Copper siding from the ship was apparently used so extensively that some aboriginal groups became known as the Copper Inuit.
Parks Canada archeologists will set sail in August to search for the Franklin expedition's two ships, the Erebus and the Terror.

  • @SvenTviking i agree, its highly unlikely the Erebus OR Terror will ever be found. it is known that both ships were crushed and sank - eskimos who were interviewed during the rescue missions of the 1850s and later said they remember meeting the white men who said one of their ships was "broken" and later they could see the 3 masts of one ship sticking out of the water. if anything is ever found it may be rusted remains of the hull plating or engines

  • Find the Erebus and the Terror? They'll be lucky! In millions of bits rotting on the bottom, after the ice finished with them.

  • @farmerator

That's right, and it was already found in 1909, perhaps in April 1909, when Canada take the official possesion of Banks Island - above the waterline and intact!

I have post a comment and a link on "The Virtual Victorian", if you are interested, because there is an article of an Austrian Newspaper from January 1910 which descripe the founding of the Investigator! I have translated parts of the article, it is very interesting, I think.

  • As usual, the reporter gets something important wrong. Everyone was rescued from HMS Investigator except for three members that had died earlier and are buried on Banks Island as seen in the report. The ship was abandoned in good order.

  • Another great piece of British History :)
