The man pictured in my video thumbnail (Mr. Anderson Cooper), along with the network that employs him (CNN), are contribuing to the mass concentration of media ownership that exists in the US today, with only 9 companies owning over 90% of the media market in what is essentially a media monopolization.

Presidential candidates, let me ask you all--how would you ensure that we as a democracy receive a greater variety of alternatives in the media to Mr. Cooper and CNN?

My name is Solomon and I'm from Chicago, IL.

  • Hahahaha Sounds like you almost ripped the camera apart turning it around there! - but you have a good point, and why is it that in every debate so far, Hillary, John and Barack are center stage, is that journalistic bias or what? . . it's not pure democracy . . . if we are looking to export our democratic ideals to other countries, I feal sorry for them.

  • Sirwizardoflight,

Thanks for your comments. I wanted to try and respect their 30-second requirement as much as possible, so I may have been a little too quick on the rotation there. But as for the journalistic bias comment, I watched the Republican show the other day and noticed that outside of Romney, Giuliani, and McCain, the other candidates (particularly Mr. Ron Paul) barely got any questions.

These debates need to be completely overhauled, in my opinion.

  • NINE companies that own NINETY percent ehh? That's not a Monopoly. You could make a case for it being an oligopoly, but 9 strong competitors by no means qualifies as "a small number" of competitors (try more like 2 or 3).

  • Xidlarus,

Thanks for your comment. Your points are quite valid. However, I should have indicated the different "sectors" of the media, if you will, that each of these 9 companies participates in. Some are involved in radio, others in technology, others in film. The point is that in each media-relevant industry, at least 2-3 of these 9 have made that industry into a monopoly. The time limit did not allow me to be more clear.

    Regards,

    -S.L.

  • CNN owns 90% of media? Get the fuck out of here, you lunny. And by the way FOX is the right wing gay company that are all right winger-crusaders.

  • The American media is controlled by our two political parties.

They've even created the same political competition between news channels, that they have for our voting system.

    Kill Your Tv !

  • Look at me, speaking with this...cool dark voice....

  • CNN = Corrupt News Network. 'Nuff said.

  • Governments can't Mandate Alternative Media without making a News Media Industry of their own. Businesses that already exist need to enter into the game on their own accord. I wonder why it hasn't happened.
