James Ives on 'Ocean Energy in Ireland: Challenges and Opportunities'

Ocean energy contained in the world's waves and marine tidal currents provides an untapped source of renewable energy. In Ireland both wave and tidal will have a role to play in meeting longer term targets for electricity consumption from renewable sources. The current target is for 500MW of Irelands energy consumption to be met by Ocean energy by 2020. Established in 2003, OpenHydro is an Irish technology business that designs and manufactures marine turbines to generate renewable energy from tidal streams. In November 2009 it successfully deployed the first commercial scale in-stream tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, on behalf of its customer, Nova Scotia Power. In this event, Openhydro CEO James Ives will outline international developments in Ocean Energy and analyse the opportunities for Ireland in the sector

A professional engineer and experienced senior executive with key sector knowledge. Previously CEO of an energy supply business and senior manager within Accenture. Early career was spent in automotive engineering specialising in fluid mechanics advising clients including Mercedes Benz and Ferrari F1. Holds a commercial DoT/MCA ocean skippers licence.
