I have to disagree with you about the controls though. I really feel like they've dumbed down the gameplay to some degree. The original felt more responsive and the 8-directional attack just gives the enemies more options to attack you.
Also, the 2-D sprites of the turtles are some of the most entertaining to watch in the original, especially when you're mashing buttons; that too was part of the soul of the game that was ripped out.

Stick with the Old Arcade game.
