Exercise Terraferma 2007

This year's eight edition of the Italo-Maltese bilateral training exercise "Terraferma" was held in two phases between September and October 2007, aimed at promoting co-operation and peace in the mediterranean.

Split over two phases, Ex TERRAFERMA will see troops of the Armed Forces of Malta training alongside the Italian armed forces, both focused on exercising the conduct of Multinational Crisis Response Operations and Humanitarian Assistance Operations should both forces be deployed together overseas in the future.

Phase 1 of this annual live training was held in Malta upto September 19, 2007, whilst Phase 2 is set in the Torre-di-Nebbia training areas, outside Bari in Italy between October 22 and 31. All the participating units will operate under a combined Italo-Maltese Command and Control structure.

Each respective country's troops has achieved a training standard that makes emphasis on the interoperability of their commands, and their units use of standard military operating procedures. These include operations like vehicle checkpoint drills, convoy and escort duties, restraint and arrest methods, premises breaching and clearance drills, medical evacuations, crowd control, improvised explosive device disposal (IEDD) measures, patrolling techniques, and weapons skill-at-arms familiarization and live firing practice.

AFM Headquarters have coordinated Phase 1 in Malta, providing a company commander along with one infantry platoon, a combat-engineers section, and a 2-man EOD team. The Italian armed forces fielded an officer as a company's second-in-command and an infantry platoon plus one combat-engineers' section, respectively from the 82nd and the 11th Regiments of the 'PINEROLO' Armoured Brigade. The locally based Italian Military Mission (MIATM) are providing support through an IEDD instructor and its Air Force AB212 helicopter. A Carabinieri team from their 2nd Mobile Brigade have also taken part.

Phase 2 in Bari will see a larger participation from the same Italian regiments of the 'PINEROLO' Armoured Brigade through personnel of two infantry platoons, one Engineers' section, one Combat Service Support Platoon, along with two Italian Army AB 212 CIO helicopters. The Carabinieri will provide one MSU Platoon from the 2nd Mobile Brigade, all accompanied by and three dedicated Liaison Officers from MIATM.

With company commander roles reversed, the AFM in Italy will deploy an officer as an infantry company's second in command, one Infantry Platoon from 1st Regiment, one Engineers Section and a two-man EOD Team from 3rd Regiment.

  • Maltese has an army, better than other little countries as Monaco or Cyprus.

Maltese is little but important, this is the heart of Mediterranean sea, the country which resisted during a very long and hard siege by the ottomans of Soliman.

  • Good work Malta and God bless from Australia
