  • Most synthetic herbicides undergo over 400 tests by the EPA and are generally considered safe to use. If the EPA determines there are hazardous properties to any herbicide or pesticide, they are either restricted for professional applicators, pulled from the shelves or not released. While they have toxic qualities with concern to plant material, almost anything on the shelf at the garden center is safe to use as long as you follow label instructions for amount and application.
