@Skapo Thanks for the reply. I know people used to do that in karate (and I used to coach basketball, but never saw it on the court), but you don't see it nowadays. A lot of old school best practices have changed, but I'll take your advice and go look it up. Thanks again for some inspiring videos. I'm only just getting started so I need all the inspiration I can get! That and padding. Loooots of padding! :-)

what was the point of sitting up with hands on his head?
adrian4106 1 year ago
@adrian4106 It helps increase the oxygen capacity of your lungs, thus making it easier to regain control of your breathing. Also, because it brings in more oxygen, it also helps to keep you from going unconscious.

@Skapo Dude, I think if a guy has a big crash like that, the last thing you wanna do is start moving him around till you know how hurt he is - what if he had broken bones or back trauma? And buddy, I don't mean this disrespectful, but do you even have concrete proof about the whole "oxygen capacity" thing? I mean, it's not like the kid was hyperventilating or anything. In any case, lifting his arms above his head would surely elongate his lungs REDUCING their capacity and making breathing harder

@matbroomfield There actually is proof of that. Just google it man. Putting your hands on or above your head increases your total intake capacity by something like 10%. Its the first thing I learned from my basketball coaches in high school and believe me it has proven more than useful on several occasions. Concerning the back/bones, he was moving fine and the first thing we wanted to make sure of was that he could breathe. Afterward we also checked for dilation in the eyes etc.

did he ever go back and land it?

He didn't, its been bought and made into a car lot so it isn't hittable anymore unfortunately. Maybe when the business goes out again. Fortunately there are better rails to hit in Portland. :)
