The beetle going around in circles until its eventual demise is symbolic of Howie's time on the island. In a sense the girl, in an obscure way, is telling Howie what is in store for him and what he is doing, basically waisting his time until the string tightens on him and he becomes trapped, hence the ending. But Howie being the fool does not twig. There are hidden symbolic messages all over the film. The writers of this movie were real genius's, unlike the mindless "movie makers" you see today.
