Wrecks Singing Rex's Blues

His name, "Rex," was immortalized in the title of a Townes Van Zandt song, "Rex's Blues," but Townes would never let Wrecks play on the song. He'd always make him sit down or at least lay out while he played it. As many times as Townes played "Rex's Blues" while Wrecks was in his band, Wrecks never played the song with Townes. Whether Townes meant that as an homage or a punishment was never quite clear.

I think he plays all the time at his club -- he's kinda like the standing opening act, I believe. But he rarely ever travels, stays on his island (Galveston Island, south of Houston).

It's at the (newish) Old Quarter in Galveston - Rex owns the place and hosts a Townes tribute show every January 1 (the day of Townes death) - I had the pleasure of going last year and it was pretty amazing. Anyone can get up and play whatever TVZ song they want. Rex puts a bottle of vodka and orange soda chaser on a table for anyone to chug that wants. Pretty awesome.
