Professor Diana Urge-Vorsatz, Director of the Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policy at Central European University describes the importance of buildings and the latest research contributing to the ongoing UN Climate Change negotiations.

The presentation was delivered on April 15, 2010 as part of the Build Green Central Eastern Europe conference (www.BuildGreenCEE.org) organized by the Romania, Polish, and Hungary Green Building Councils and supported by the World Green Building Council. The event brought together 14 national Green Building Councils to share their knowledge of their local markets and discuss regional and international policy and trends.

Diana Ürge-Vorsatz is a Professor and Director of the Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policy (3CSEP) at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California (Los Angeles and Berkeley), and has an Masters in Physics from the Eotvos University in Budapest, Hungary.

She acted as a Coordinating Lead Author for the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the chapter "Climate Change Mitigation in Buildings", served on the United Nation's Scientific Expert Group on Climate Change, and is presently leading the buildings-related work in the Global Energy Assessment to be published in 2010. Beyond having published widely in scholarly journals and book sections in relation to energy efficiency and sustainable energy policy, she is serving as the associate editor of the Springer journal "Energy Efficiency", where she has co-edited two special issues on the relationship between efficiency and climate change.
She has worked on and directed several international research projects for organizations including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Global Environment Facility, United Nation's Environment Programme, the World Energy Council, Climate Strategies and the World Bank, and has been a Visiting Professor at the International Christian University of Tokyo. She has been serving or served on the Governing and Advisory boards of several organizations, including the European Climate Foundation (ECF), the European Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ECEEE), the European Research Council, the Collaborative Appliance Standards and Labeling Program (CLASP), the Hungarian Energy Efficient Cofinancing Program (HEECP), and is a founding member of the Hungarian Green Buildings Council. Dr. Ürge-Vorsatz has been recognized to contribute to the Nobel Peace Prize of the IPCC in 2007, received the Hungarian Republic's Presidential Award "Medium Cross" in 2008, as well as the "Role Model" award in 2009.
