I don't understand how a song about clowns can be so sad

I'm sure a careful look at the lyrics will show you that it's about much more than clowns.

Marrina is a very talented pianist. Her fingers just glide over the keys. The circus music before and after the Clowns is a very nice touch. Even nicer is the switch to a minor key for the ending. An excellent arrangement!

the term "send in the clowns" came from when in the circus, if something tragic happened, they would send the clowns on to distract the audience from the tragedy. It is used as a figure of speech in this song, because that is exactly what the woman singing this song is going through at the moment. Pure genius on Mr. Sondheim's part.

Send in the Clowns is not about clowns. Clowns is a metaphor describing the situation in which Desiree and Frederik find themselves in in Sondheim's play "A Little Night Music."
