This is the first in a special series called, Spider Class 101, in which I will be sharing educational information about spiders all summer long. This video deals with some tips for those who would like to breed and raise some spiderlings, in particular, the Phidippus audax species of jumping spiders.

  • and also how do i tell the difference between male and female for the Phidippus audax? TY in advance

  • @TrainerKee - Hi Kee, when spiderlings or slings, it is very had to sex them. As they mature the pedipalps can help, especially in mature males. Their palps will be bulbus at the tips. It looks something like little boxing gloves! LOL Check out my vid, "Jumping Spiders; Girl Meets Boy!" You will see the difference in their palps on that video. The females are usually a bit larger and of course you can look carefully under the Phid. a. and look for the little epigynum on the females.

  • how do i know when to start spraying my sling with mist water?, and if i dont spray them with mist water, will they die?

  • @TrainerKee - I would bottle mist (one good fine spray) maybe every couple days. If they do not eat, spiders will dehydrate very quickly and die. They also need a little humidity to help them molt.

  • @adrianlwkeat - I use baby aphids, if I can find any, or thye smallest newly born fruit flies (flightless variety) or I catch some tiny green flys off plants around my house. No vid other than the one you saw on feeding slings. If you check out my channel info, you'll see I live in Michigan, USA.

  • @BobCsAll - Hi Adrian, I'n not sure if the Dandelion (yellow) flower/weed grows by you, but the little black insects that can be seen fairly easily against the yellow flower, are called, "thrips", or new born aphids. They don't run, nor fly. New born are better than mature aphids as the spiderlings digest them easier.

that's awesome. so which are the primary food u use or do u use a mixture? do u know wat are these tiny black insects from dandelions?

do u have a clip where u feed them these insects?

which part of the states r u from?

  • @adrianlwkeat - You can feed them little aphids from rose bushes or other such plants, and someone shared with me you can rustle little tiny black insects from the yellow dandelion flower. The spiderlings seem to do well on their own eggsacs that give them protien for some time before they need external food.
