With crystal clear waters and white sands, garbage is not often a word associated with the Maldives, but when the Indian Ocean tsunami struck the archipelago in 2004, it was one of the legacies communities had to deal with.

Garbage from within the islands and from places as far away as Indonesia was strewn across paradise and Australian Red Cross teamed up with Canadian Red Cross and the government of the Maldives to find a solution. The equivalent of more than 2000 garbage trucks of rubbish was removed and work began with communities to find long term solutions to garbage disposal. Learn from the people who live there, the new ways they have for dealing with waste.

Travel also to the island of Dhuvafaaru where Red Cross is building more than 600 new houses, and meet some of the new home owners when they visit the site and see where they will live.
