"Addict Nation-An Intervention for America," is a new book by Jane Velez-Mitchell (New York Times Best Selling Author and Host of "Issues" on HLN) and Sandra Mohr (Director of the financial film "Stock Shock"). Visit www.AddictNation.org

ARE YOU AN ADDICT AND DON'T EVEN KNOW IT?
Americans are being lured into addiction. And what we're hooked on isn't necessarily illegal or even hard to come by. Prescription medications are making us high. Fast food is making us fat. The Internet keeps us constantly distracted with everything from gambling to porn, to compulsive social networking. Television bombards us with glamorized violence. From billboards, to online pop ups, to commercials... we're seduced into buying more stuff we don't need while we drown in growing debt. Massive profits fill the pockets of a handful of "pushers" at the expense of everyone else. Corporations, government and the media are creating the illusion that the more we have, the better we are, and so we crave whatever they're selling and become addicted to their products in the process. Americans are being seduced into self-destructive behavior on a mass scale. It's time to take our power back.
In her trademark no holds barred style, Jane Velez-Mitchell asks: do you really want to be a slave, existing just to make someone else rich and powerful? If the answer is no, then read on. Addict Nation is our blueprint for change, but first we must see what is really going on. This is an intervention!

"All things in moderation." I would argue that TV doesn't encourage people to think in the same way as reading, which requires processing written words, or interactive media such as video games, which demand skill, strategy, hand-eye coordination, and exploration. Still, TV is definitely a valid form of entertainment and should be treated as such.

It isn't easy to cure addiction. It's never been and never will be easy, and I'm not trying to shortchange that triumph. There are some helpful things about self-help books, but it isn't an end all and be all, and you shouldn't market it as one, because by doing that, this book is just exploiting people the same way the government does.

Also, debt. If you're spending money you don't have, you can expect it to come back and bite you at a significant interest rate.

Actually the worse food is for you the cheaper it is because it is subsidized. Healthy food is out of some people's price range.
