Looked up and saw smoke coming from the building.))An explosion rocked a California hotel...injuring more than a dozen people and causing major damage to the structure.The hotel which is near the San Diego Convention Center is under construction. About 400 workers were on site when part of the hotel's face was ripped off and debris went flying everywhere.((Maurice Luque/Spokesperson, San Diego Fire Rescue 3436 What the firefighters told me is that they were amazed that most of those injuries were somewhat minor.))Five people are in critical condition and 3 of those are being treated in a hospital burn unit. Investigators are still putting together an official report, but they say they're confident the explosion wasn't an act of terrorism.They've traced it to the hotel's utility room...and fire officials say it was probably caused by mechanical failure or gas.The 30-story Hilton hotel was supposed to open in December. No word yet if that will be delayed.

i was there thought i was dead

the plumbers were bleeding the gas line to relieve the pressure and were airing the area out when some guy nearby lit a cigarette and ignitied the gas. airing the area out takes about 20 minutes or so and a few fans, and an access to fresh air. they should have pre -briefed before the bleed. this accident shouldn't have ever happened. -saftey first-
