In 2010, the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment launched the multimedia campaign "Piracy Doesn't Work in NYC" with the support of the creative industry and government partners, to raise awareness and educate New Yorkers about the threat of digital piracy to the jobs of nearly 700,000 New Yorkers who make their living working on or supporting the creative industries.

  • "Show the world that piracy doesn't work"

But it did. A bunch of people walked away with free movies.

And I'm glad we're talking about the people making the movies. The guy in the Darth Vader suit never got paid for his role. You know why? The studio also owned the distribution company and charged themselves enough to make sure that Star Wars still hasn't made any money on paper. And they use that as a reason to not pay him. Yeah, I'm the one with no soul.

  • On the one hand, I generally believe you should indeed pay for your media consumption.

On the other hand, fuck this manipulative shit.

  • Typical government manipulation: every official copy of this video has commenting turned off. THEY'RE what's wrong with everything. That's not how a democracy fails... lack of transparency.

  • Watch a video called: Be a HERO!!! STOP SOPA. That's all I got to say. Blame the studios who distributed the piracy. Not the ends meet people.

  • It doesn't even make sense in the warped reality of the clip. He's standing there, waiting for someone to take a free movie that they wouldn't have bought anyway so that he can fire the woman? And THEY are the ones without soul? Seems legit.

  • Slippery Slope is logical fallacy.

Piracy sucks. But look at Google trend search volume comparison between "torrent" and "Netflix" in the US. The availability of digital distribution at the right price point is the most potent weapon against piracy.

Legislation is NOT the answer - innovation IS.

  • IS THAT MARY STEEMBURGEN? I'LL NEVER BUY OR WATCH ANYTHING SHE MAKES AGAIN THAT BITCH

  • why will people lose their jobs?

the media companies still need to produce films, tv shows etc...

they just need to trim some of the fat off the top!

I download content because it costs me and my son just about $40 to go watch a movie at the cinema, and i can get real good quality movies for download before they have come out at the movies here in New Zealand....it's a pretty simple choice in my eyes

  • I think that the woman and the guy hawking the films will lose their jobs because when people take the movies and walk away, it shows that corporate funded performance art doesn't work in the way they want it to.

  • DON'T FUCK WITH THE INTERNET.

  • They should put Tom Cruise there instead of this poor woman with mic. And say if we take those dvds then mr Cruise will not be able to buy himself a 1121th pair of shoes.

Of course it is always better to fire common workers because of online piracy than to cut star salaries by 0,1% or their own huge profits.

  • and continuation come video renting ,television and others for 70 year (copyrights ) ......soo no one can tellme that they are poor ....that is manipulation !!
