The Idle Hour mansion at Dowling College, now known as Fortunoff Hall, has gone through myriad uses since it was built in the 1800s by William K. Vanderbilt.
According to members of the campus community, some of the "ghost stories" associated with our historic mansion include a maid who fell to her death when pushed down the grand staircase and now haunts the third floor; unsavory characters who may have been "knocked off" in the tunnels beneath the mansion by prohibition-era gangster Dutch Shultz; the occurrence of very bizarre rituals held by a cult that used the mansion as a retreat in the 1930s; and Linda—a lady who plays piano in the music house after everyone is gone...and the doors are locked for the night.
Chances are that you have heard some of these stories or personally experienced a campus haunting, this video demonstrates some of the experiences our Student Ghost Hunters went through on Halloween night at Fortunoff Hall.
